What is the reet of Mahdavis?

Mahdi Alaihis Salam has often used poetry to convey a message or a command to his followers.

During his time, Farsi (Persian) was the language of Muslims and almost all books of Mahdavis from that era are in Farsi. The rest are in Arabic. While Farsi was the language of scholars, the commoners spoke their own language or dialect. Brij was one of the languages spoken in North India. With the advent of the Mughals, Brij transitioned into Urdu.

One Word That Can Change Your Life

Understand the meaning of these terms first:

Ikhtiyar (اختیار)- it means choice, preference, option, will, discretion, control, power, authority. Allah has given us the power of choice. We can choose to do whatever we want. Good or bad. To do or not do. To talk or to stay silent. To help or withdraw. To pray or postpone prayers. To fast or miss the fast. To give charity or accumulate money. All of this is our choice or ikhtiyar.

Bey-Ikhtiyar (بے اختیار)- it means without control or authority, helpless, without choice. Think of a slave. He is owned by his master. He has no choice. He has to wake up when his master wants him to and go to sleep when his master allows. Eat what his master provides. Wear clothes as per his master’s wishes. Work as his master commands. Take rest when he allows. He has no choice, but to follow the orders of his master. He is without choice or bey-ikhtiyar.

Bakhtiyar  (بختیار)– It means lucky, fortunate, prosperous, auspicious. Continue reading One Word That Can Change Your Life

This World is a Prison

It is reported in Sahih Muslim that Hazrat Abu HurairaRZ reported that the ProphetSLM said,

The world is a prison for the believer (momin) and paradise for the infidel (kafir).

O Suhael, you have become comfortable in this world and the world has embraced you in her arms and in the enjoyment of its material comforts you have become content with the life of this world and have forgotten the hereafter. Wake up and reflect upon the above words of your lord.

How to Get Rid of Fear and Grief

Fear and grief.

Two emotions which are always associated with us.

The fears we have : fear of loss, fear of sickness, fear of being judged by others, fear of insects, fear of dogs, fear of exams, fear of failure, fear of death, the list is endless.

We grieve: when we lose wealth, near and dear ones, our position, power and respect, when things don’t go our way, when our children become disobedient, when life is not a bed of roses – there are innumerable reasons for us to grieve.

Fear and grief. Two emotions we wish we didn’t have. Continue reading How to Get Rid of Fear and Grief

How To Give All Your Earnings To Charity and Yet Make a Living

مَن جَاء بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا

(Surah Al-Anaam, 6:160)

Translation: Whoever shall come [before God] with a good deed will gain ten times the like thereof

The above verse was recited quite often in prayers by our buzargaan-e-deen. I have heard this umpteen number of times from Hazrat Faqeer Ashraf Miyan Saheb (Miyan Mamoo) of Channapatna.

I think that the repetition was to encourage people to do good. Do good and you are rewarded ten times the worth of the good. Contrast this with the next part of the verse which says that the compensation for an evil is only to the extent of the evil. Carrot and stick. But with lots of carrot. The Hadees of Abu Zar Ghaffari (RZ)

Here is a hadees of the ProphetSLM from Al-Meyar. An English version has not been available so far, so I thought that a translation would benefit English readers.

The ProphetSLM said, “O Abu Zar! Do you know what I grieve and contemplate about and what I yearn for?”

The companionsRZ replied, “Tell us O RasoolullahSLM about your grief and contemplation”.

Then the ProphetSLM said, “I yearn to see my brothers.”

The companionsRZ said, “We are your brothers.”

The ProphetSLM said, “You are my companions. They are my brothers. They will come after me. Their stature will be the stature of prophets. And they will be in the rank of martyrs with Allah. To please Allah, they will separate from their fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. They will forsake wealth for the sake of Allah. In their humility, they will think of themselves to be lowly. They will not go near the lusts and the waste matters of the world. They will assemble in a house from among the houses of Allah Most High. They will be grieving and desolate in the love of Allah. Their hearts will be attached to Allah and their provision will come from Allah. And all their work will specifically be for Allah. If one among them falls sick, his sickness in the eyes of  Allah will be superior to a thousand years of worship. Abu Zar, if you wish, I would like to say more.”
